The Description
With these funds I will...be able to attend the Greg Tang workshop in St. Louis, Missouri on November 3, 2016. This workshop is a continuation to the institute that I attended in Kansas City during the summer of 2015. I learned so much from that institute that I made two drastic changes: 1) I now I am working toward my master's degree as a Mathematics Specialist; 2) I have a very different, and more beneficial way to introduce first graders to math. Greg Tang taught me a lot about the importance of number sense. Students who don't look at numbers in a flexible way, will struggle with math all through their schooling. I now introduce substituting concepts to the students, math fluency games and progressions, math tasks with students leading the strategies, daily word problems and hands on tools with every lesson. My knowledge that I have gained from these conferences and classes have also allowed me to be a facilitator for math fluency for my building, working with grades K through 2. I am also a facilitator for the district on the math design team. My goal this year is to help teachers better understand the role of number sense and how it helps students become more fluent with their number facts, as well as all other math concepts. This workshop will have many strategies for me to use in my classroom, as well as present to fellow teachers in my building as well as the district.
The money I am requesting is for the registration fee, and gas to and from St. Louis from Kansas City, MO. $230 is the registration fee. $35 in gas money. My mother lives close to St. Louis, so my lodging would be with her.
