The Description

College tours are life-changing! They’re inspiring! They give middle and high schoolers the opportunity to picture themselves in college AND as college graduates.

That’s why we are taking 30 students from our Mentor Leaders program in Philadelphia on a three-day Black College Tour this spring. We selected Historically Black Colleges and Universities because it’s important for our mentees, as young black men, to see college campuses filled with people who look like them and who are thriving academically.

We’ll be visiting Howard University (Washington, DC), Morgan State (Baltimore) and Bowie State (Bowie, MD). Our goal is for the students to apply to at least one of those schools during the visit or leave motivated to apply to – and attend – the college or university of their choice. The cost of transportation, hotel, food & supplies is $500 per student. Our goal is to raise enough money to cover the costs for 30 students.

No donation is too small.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal, we will use the donations collected to purchase supplies, food, uniform shirts and blazers for our 8-week leadership academy program, which engages 40 young men from across Philadelphia.

About the Creator

Well I'm known by many as Mr.G, Mr.Garrett, or G. At the beginning of 2017 in the classroom, I remember assigning two of my black male students lunch detention to have a conversation about their missing homework. I saw myself in these two young men and was frustrated that they were so talented yet so unfocused on their studies. Throughout the conversation, I reminded them how talented they were and that the opportunities in life would be endless if they continuously strive for excellence. One of those students told me at the end of the year that that conversation let him know that I was someone who had his best interests in mind and that he wanted to make me proud. That moment lead to the start of "Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders" a nonprofit organization that provides mentoring programs for middle and high school young men in the Philadelphia area. Mentor Leaders goal is to foster a commitment to young people that will promote pro-social friendships, strong interpersonal skills, and reassert a sense of hope in the future. Mentor Leaders produce Mentor Leaders will focus primarily on middle school youths. It is projected that within three years, 50% of the system's students will be in middle school. This age group is particularly problematic and a perfect time for mentoring to be effective. Mentor Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders mentoring programs will pair a youth with mentor for 10 months. During that time the two will participate in weekly planned activities to strengthen the relationship between the two and improve the young person's confidence and hopefulness.

NEXT LEVEL....."Mentors Leaders Produce Mentor Leaders" and "All the Kings Men" joined forces to create "KINGS UNIVERSITY" We are gearing up to launch an 8-week leadership academy program that will engage 40 young men across the city and we need your help to make it happen. We are soliciting sponsorship for boys ($200/boy) in order to accomplish our goal of funding the project. Sponsorship grants them uniforms shirts/blazer, program supplies and food (snacks/lunch).  With your support, we can guarantee successful programming for every boy who participates.
