Building The Foundation: Startup Classroom Supplies

The Description

When I was a kid, the first thing I can remember wanting to be when I grew up was an architect. I cycled through lots of different grown up dreams since then, including joining the Navy, studying engineering, becoming a lawyer, working in finance, going into politics, etc. I never thought my first real professional career would be teaching, but I love it. The important point however, is that I grew up in an educational environment that empowered me to dream big in any direction. Not all children in our country have that luxury, and that's wrong. Thus, I'm here to join all those who have given so much to advance this work already. The first step for me is learning important base skills at Teach For America's intensive training institute this summer in Houston.

After completing Teach for America’s - 2017 Houston Institute in early July, I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I'll be teaching 8th grade literacy at KIPP Indy College Prep Middle School in Indianapolis. Though I'm not the artsy type, I am still so excited to decorate and turn it into a unique learning environment. Even more exciting is the opportunity to meet my students and their families. As I'm learning, one of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily, materials that we took for granted at the schools I attended as a kid. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies.

To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise from PledgeCents to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom chalk full of materials. This fundraiser will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can create and provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework.

Thank you for considering to support me and my students at the beginning of this exciting journey.

PledgeCents allows me to keep whatever I raise (it all gets turned into an Amazon Gift Card), so anything you can contribute really will make a difference for my first year. I want to make a great impression and a lasting impact on my first group of students. Letting them know that they have a community that supports them both near and far will get us on the right track. Here is a complete list of the materials that your investment will help provide for the students of my very first classroom:

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal, I will purchase as many materials as possible. I will prioritize the materials that are most essential to students (pencils, paper, etc.) as they are the most important to ensuring that students can participate in my daily lessons. Thank you again for your support. If you cannot donate, please share the page and tag me!

Fundraiser Updates (1)

Thank You!

August 30, 2017

Thank you everybody for your donations and support. Now that we've gone over a month into the year, I have a better sense of some of the things I need for the room. Here is how I used the funds. My Master's in Teacher program at Marian University has also started, and I've begun to learn about ways to create a calmer, soothing classroom more optimized for students' brains developmentally. That has been my main focus in spending these funds. (I've also only done the free Amazon shipping, so I don't waste any funds on that!)

- 4x 25 foot clear bulb string lights @ $15.95 each. (Hanging these will allow me to turn off the florescent lights but keep the room illuminated enough so that students can see well and don't feel like it's too easy to fall asleep. I had noticed hanging string lights in other veteran teachers' rooms and wanted to incorporate it into mine. I only have two string lights that run around the middle of my room over the desks at the moment, so these four will go along each wall of the room and really brighten it up.)

- 1x essential oil diffuser @ $15.95 (This goes along with the concept of "brain breaks" I've recently been learning about at Marian. It's important to set a calm environment for kids when they come into the room, and scent is a powerful way to do that. I have some problems right now in my class with classroom management and kids being up out of their seats and high energy, so I'm working on adapting my room to be more of a calming environment that relaxes them. That's also why I pained the cabinets and painted the blue mountain mural.)

- 1x calm body, calm mind essential oil blend, 30ml @ $14.99 (This will go with the diffuser. It seemed like the right scent for the effect I am endeavoring to create in my room!)

- 2x box of 96 Dixon wood #2 pencils @ $11.48 each. (Beyond the classroom environment items, I just need more pencils. It's amazing how quickly students go through them, even when I have them trade in a dull one for the sharp one. They manage to lose them or break them or whatnot quite quickly I've discovered! My school provides a lot of pencils, but I still need more, so this will help that a lot!)

- 1x box of 144 arrowhead pencil eraser caps @ $4.93 (I've also discovered the students often break off the erasers from their pencils. These eraser caps will allow me to continue using pencils that have had their erasers pulled off!)

- 1x copy of a paperback book titled, "For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood... and the Rest of Y'all Too: Reality Pedagogy and Urban Education" @ $11.19 (I've hear repeatedly from multiple people that this is an important book to read for teachers in my situation. I'm getting lots of coaching from lots of smart people, but I figure if they are all telling me to read this book, I had better get around to doing it.)

Again, thank you to everybody who donated funds to my classroom. It really means the world to me to have your support. This work is harder than I ever imagined it would or could be, so knowing people are there supporting me along the way means a lot to me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. My kids will definitely benefit from your generosity.

About the Creator

I'm excited to be a part of the TFA family (#Indyfam) and join the movement to solve education inequity in the United States. All students deserve a quality education. I was fortunate to be selected from a nationwide talent applicant pool to join a teacher corps comprised of leaders who commit a minimum of two years to teach in high-need public schools. This summer, I will be participating in an intensive skill and knowledge development program in Houston that aims to increase student achievement. I'm also engaged in comprehensive professional development programming including seminars, discussion groups, workshops, and content and professional learning communities specific to teaching license areas. Originally, I come from Colorado, but I will be teaching 8th grade literacy in Indianapolis. Can't wait!
