The Description

With these funds I will.....

I work at the brand new campus for Wissahickon Charter School (Awbury). The school building was just built last year. I work as a learning support teacher for a group of 20 third graders. As we moved into our second year as a new school, our population grew by about 100 students. We quickly out grew the learning support room that we were allotted to work out of, and I was given the task of turning a completely empty classroom into a workable learning space.  Mind you, when I say empty, I mean empty, no furniture, no cabinets, no shelves, no books, nothing! I had two days to get the classroom up and running, scrounging around the school for extra furniture and supplies. It is still a work in progress but it is now a usable space! The problem I have run into now that the school year has started is finding books that appeal to the students I work with and are on a level they can read independently. As a second year teacher I have not yet collected enough books to have a classroom library. There are books that the school has purchased that my students loan out to read at school and at home, but I have found that my students are not always interested in these books or they have exhausted the supply of books for their reading level and now are rereading books they have already read. Although I teach 3rd grade only, the range of reading levels my students have are vast. I need supplies of books that range from a Kindergarten to third grade level that cater to a variety of different interests. Many of my students struggle greatly with reading and I struggle to match them with books they can get excited about! I'd also like to stock my library with a variety of different reading materials such as audiobooks, kid's magazines, even reading computer programs to keep my students interested and not frustrated in Reading. I would greatly appreciate any donation to help turn my classroom library into something my students are excited about and proud of!

Thank you!

About the Creator

I am entering my 6th year as a Special Education teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia, PA! I have found such a passion in building relationships with my students and finding ways to teach my students in the way that they learn best! I teach learning support to students with a wide variety of disabilities and need. I work hard to see each student as an individual with their own needs and design an education plan specific to their needs. I find so much joy in what I do and look forward to growing with my students in the years to come!
