About

Wissahickon Charter School is a K-8 tuition-free public charter school with a mission that focuses on the environment as an integrating theme for instruction, as well as parental involvement, service learning, and peace and conflict resolution. The Wissahickon Charter School has been planned around three essential elements: An environmental focus recognizing the importance of active learning that allows students to experience the curriculum; Recognition of service learning projects as a key element in students’ academic success; An emphasis on family involvement at all levels of the school organization, with special emphasis on parents as partners in the learning experiences of their children.

Chantal Barr

Teacher

This is my fourth year teaching at Wissahickon Charter School. I absolutely love it! Every inch of my being confirms that I am an urban educator. Not just because I work at an urban school, but because I Breathe, HELP, AND Understand my students. Being an urban educator is not easy, but I would not trade it for the world. I obtained my undergrad and Masters from Arcadia University. I am certified early childhood, elementary education, and special education.

Rebecca Berliner

First Grade teacher

I am a first year, First Grade teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in the Germantown area of North Philadelphia. I have wanted to be an elementary school teacher for as long as I can remember, and was inspired to work in an urban, underprivileged setting when I realized (through volunteer experiences in college) the remarkable discrepancy in quality of education and resources among schools. I decided that I wanted to do whatever I could to provide every child access to the education they deserve.

Amanda Strain

Literacy Coach

I have been working in urban education for the past 12 years. During this time I have worked as a 4th, 5th and 6th grade teacher. Currently I am working as a literacy coach, providing support to both teachers and working with small groups of struggling readers. Creating life long readers is what drives me. My position affords me the opportunity to help students directly, but also to help teachers develop and hone their literacy implementation. I find such satisfaction when I help a student strengthen his/her reading skills and realize how exciting reading can be!

Lovelee Polite

I am a 7th and 8th grade science teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia PA. I love empowering young people to think scientifically.

Lauren Smith

2nd Grade Teacher

I teach second grade in a Philadelphia charter school, and love my job. Our school is one that truly has the best interests of our students at heart, and we work every day to give the kids we teach the best that we can. Sometimes we need things that are beyond our limited budget, and we are grateful for the kind hearts that exist who want to help schools do their jobs to their fullest potential. Thank you, to all of you!

Haley McCormack

I am a Kindergarten teacher in Northwest Philadelphia. In Kindergarten, children begin taste their own independence by developing their self-awareness and exploring group dynamics. I love to enrich our learning time with plenty of opportunities for play. This play time develops agency, perseverance, cooperation, problem-solving, creativity, and many more practical, magical, and necessary life-skills!

Jennifer Coppertino

7th & 8th Grade English/Language Arts

Hi! I'm the 7th & 8th grade English/Language Arts teacher at Wissahickon Charter School's Awbury campus. This is my first year at this school and I feel like I won the lottery! My dream position has always been to teach Middle School Literacy so I couldn't be happier! Working in a brand new building, 5 minutes from my house, with an amazing team ... well, that's the icing and the cherry on top!

Kathy Tench

reading specialist

I am the reading specialist for grades 3-5 at an inner city charter school where I have worked for 10 years. I use a program called Philadelphia Reads to get free classroom fiction books for my students. Unfortunately they have very few non-fiction books. I would like to build a library on non-fiction books for my low readers. I find they are fascinated with the world and it would fit with out environmental mission. Most non-fiction books are written at much higher levels than my students read at so I would like to find lower-level books for them to have.

Sarah Kessler

4th grade Teacher

I am 4th grade teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia, PA. This is my 3rd year teaching 4th grade. I hope to inspire my students to be life long learners and give them the tools they need to be successful.

Courtney MacGregor

Special Education Teacher

Imagine facing your most frustrating task every day for 8 hours a day. That's how my student's with special need feel when they come to school. Everyday I try to find a way to make them feel smart, accomplished, and victorious because they did something they never thought they could do. When they show me that "I got it!" face it makes it all worth it.

Gail Schroder

I am a special education teacher at Wissahickon Charter School. I teach in a self-contained classroom and throughout the day I have students ranging from 2nd- 7th grade. I work each day to meet the needs of students through small group instruction and academic interventions. In my classroom, I strive daily to meet academic needs, but also provide social and behavior instruction. My classroom is individualized so that every student is getting what they need.

Philip McCabe

5th Grade Math and Science

Hello, My name is Philip McCabe and I'm a 5th grade math and science teacher working at Title One (low income) school in the city of Philadelphia. This year in science we're studying Physical Science with a focus on liquids, solids and solutions. There isn't an established curriculum at the school and no supplies currently exist. For years I've been able to teach this lesson with materials I've purchase from the dollar store and lessons found on the internet. The Next Generation FOSS Science Kits for this unit cost over $1,300. I would love to be able to at least buy the FOSS restock items for the kits ($192.00) along with reusable workbooks. I teach two classes of 28. (7 groups of 4 students per class). It would make for a more authentic experience to let them use real lab tools such as test tubes vs. the plastic party cups we currently use. My students are currently learning about what scientists do each day and the tools they use to investigate their curiosities. I want my students to believe that they are actually scientists in a laboratory classroom in the hopes of inspiring them to pursue science as an of study or an eventual career. Having the proper supplies may help me to do just that!

Randy Berman

I am the health & PE teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia Pa. Im working very hard to increase our students exposure and interest in different forms of exercise and activity. My goal is to create students who spend a lifetime living healthy lifestyles.

Anni Tacchino

Learning Support Specialist

Welcome to Ms. T's class! I am a middle school math special education teacher. Doesn't that sound fun?! Actually, I love what I do. Middle school math is hard, and middle schoolers can be challenging, but they're also amazing! I struggled with math as a kid, and it wasn't until later in life that math started to make sense to me. I'm committed to setting off those lightbulbs earlier for my kids so that they can be successful in school and in life. Thanks for stopping by!

Elizabeth Kim

5th Grade ELA Teacher

I stepped into the classroom for the first time after completing Philadelphia Teaching Fellows training. That was already 3 years ago! Since then, I've learned so much and had the privilege of working with so many bright, talented students of various backgrounds. I love working with students on discovering ways to connect what we're learning in the classroom with the real world, applying it to create social consciousness.

Hayley Tucker

Kindergarten Teacher

I am a Kindergarten teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia, PA.

Jennifer Goren

Learning Support Teacher

I'm a learning support teacher at Wissahickon Charter School. Many of my students struggle with reading. We work on reading skills in small groups, but when my older students return to class they are often embarrassed to read books that look like "baby books" in front of their classmates. I am interested is supplying students with books that appear to be books for older students, but are on level for students reading lower level books. Students can then continue practicing independent reading without feeling embarrassed.

Nancy Stehman

Learning Specialist

I am entering my 6th year as a Special Education teacher at Wissahickon Charter School in Philadelphia, PA! I have found such a passion in building relationships with my students and finding ways to teach my students in the way that they learn best! I teach learning support to students with a wide variety of disabilities and need. I work hard to see each student as an individual with their own needs and design an education plan specific to their needs. I find so much joy in what I do and look forward to growing with my students in the years to come!

Christy Halcom

6th Grade Language Arts and Social Science

I am a 6th Grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher. My goal is to help kids find their love of reading, their creativity, and most of all, to push them to question the world around them and to become deep, critical thinkers.

Jennifer Reese

Lead Teacher/daycare

My name is Jennifer Reese. I am the Lead Teacher in a small daycare at Wissahickion Charter School in Philadelphia. What makes this learning environment unique in the daycare, is that the infants and toddlers I care for are the children of the teachers, assistant teachers and administrators at the school. These individuals work so hard to give the students a great community to learn and strive in, so I feel an extra responsibility in providing their children with a day full of activities, learning and a caring environment. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts the daycare is last to get funding. This dynamic makes my job a challenge since infants and toddlers learn effectively through sensory activities. Extra funding would allow for the purchase a sensory table, wood blocks and various other sensory and gross motor toys to enhance learning. Your attention to this concern is greatly appreciated. With your help we look forward to providing the infants and toddlers, a learning environment conducive to the standards that their parents provide everyday to the students at our school.
