With these funds I will be able to attend a one day workshop on April 28, 2016 in King of Prussia, Pa in which I will explore strategies to improve teaching with nonfiction texts in reading and writing. I will also benefit from collaborating with peers from various school districts and grade levels. This workshop will be provided by the Reading and Writing Workshop of the Teacher's College of Columbia. 

My students will benefit from newly invigorated lesson plans that are content rich and use interesting and accessible nonfiction texts. This is an important workshop to attend because comprehension of nonfiction literature is highly emphasized in the Common Core Standards. It is also an area in which students have little prior experience and with which they generally struggle. Not only will my current students benefit from the knowledge I gain from this workshop, but so will all of my future students.
