Beat the Heat in the Science Classroom!

The Description

With these funds I will...purchase 2 tower fans ($63.97 each) from Home Depot for my K - 4 science classroom, which also serves as the meeting place for the 4 - 8 Lego robotics team. Many schools in the Philadelphia School District are in older buildings without air conditiong. During the warmer months Philadelphia becomes extremely humid and muggy, which causes the older school buildings to become intolerable at times. We often have early dismissals and school closings related to the intense heat. I have been working in my classroom for the past few weeks with the windows open, and it has been very difficult at times to remain in my classroom. It will become even hotter once there are 25 - 29 other bodies in the room.

In order for learning to take place, students must feel comfortable. I have worked hard to create a welcoming environment for my students so that maximum instruction and learning can take place. I am afraid that the intense heat in my classroom will directly impact my students' learning in a negative way. As I'm sure everyone is aware, teacher's are spending large amounts of their own money to create a welcoming environment for their students. Unfortunately, I have already spent the maximum amount that I am able to afford for my classroom. If you were able to invest any amount, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to the towers that I would like to purchase:

I have included a little extra in the dollar amount requested to cover the cost of any additional tax.

Thank you for taking the time to view my cause! I also thank you in advance for considering an investment in education.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...one fan for the classroom, and put any additional funds towards purchasing the second fan. I would ideally like to have two fans in the room so that I can station them in a manner that promotes maximum air circulation throughout the room.

Fundraiser Updates (1)

Fully funded!

September 8, 2015

Wow! A big thank you to all who invested in my cause, and also to all who participated in the $1 match facebook share. My cause wasn't even live for 24 hours... you're all awesome. Thanks to you, my cause is fully funded! I chose to end the cause early so that I could get the fans ordered for my kiddos and I asap! It's still awfully hot here in Philadelphia. :) I will also put the extra money invested towards additional supplies for my classroom as the need arises (consumables for our science projects). I will be sure to post another update with where that extra money went.

Thank you again! You've truly helped to make a difference in my classroom!

About the Creator

Thank you for visiting my page! My name is Heather Histed and I have my teaching certification for grades PreK - 4. I attended Shippensburg University and graduated magna cum laude in 2013. I love working with children and I have been graced with many amazing opportunities over the past few years. During my time at Ship, I was a substitute teacher for the child center on campus, and I had the honor of receiving the Taylor Internship to student teach 1st grade at the Grace B. Luhrs University Lab School. Upon graduation I accepted a position to teach Montessori Preschool in my hometown, and eventually moved to Philadelphia, PA where I am currently teaching K-4 science in the city. I am also the Lego robotics team coach for my school. I love gaining new knowledge of my practice through my daily experiences and collaborating with other professionals in the field. I'm looking forward to discovering where else this journey will take me.
