The Description

For the past three years, New England IB middle schools (from Boston, Hartford, Kennebunk, Provincetown, and Brockton) have collaborated to host a conference at Tufts each May for students around issues such as air pollution, access to clean water, and pathways to peace.

Each school will send 10-12 students. Two students from each school combine into Action Teams to reinforce collaboration across different IB schools, states, and grade levels, with the following purposes:

  • empower young people to see themselves as changemakers

  • have students collaborate with peers from across the region in service projects

  • have students identify ways to transfer their new learning or understanding to their own communities

  • challenge students to see the connection between academic learning (learning about the issues) and meaningful action (what makes sense to do to help)

In the past, we have looked at global issues that did not necessarily affect our students’ communities. We are returning to a focus on an issue that impacts them more directly: food insecurity.

We are looking to fundraise for action session materials, lunch and conference souvenirs (e.g. t-shirts, water bottles).

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal, we will scale back the materials required and fundraise via other methods in our school communities.
