The Description

With these funds I will...build several beehives with my students that focus on different functional designs.  The goal of this project is to educate our students on the importance of bees and the potential significance of colony collapse.  We want to do our share to ensure that the decline in bee populations be diminished.  The money collected will be used to purchase lumber, nails, glue, frames, protective equipment, and bees of course!  One of our designs will be a multi story Langstroth style.  Another one of our designs will be built on top of a discarded aquarium that will enable a clear view into the hive.  One of the hives will also feature six quart sized mason jars inverted into the roof structure to provide a manner in which to harvest honey from the hive easily.

The breakdown of materials necessary for this project are:

cedar wood and fence posts for constructing both deep and shallow boxes ($125)

plywood for bases and tops ($25)

small frames ($30)

wax cell dividers for small frames ($30)

large frames ($90)

wax cell dividers for large frames ($90)

queen excluder screens ($40)

quart sized mason jars with caps ($15)

aluminum screen ($10)

queen bees ($85)

compressor with two nail guns and one stapler ($225)

nails and staples for compressor ($35)

wood glue ($5)

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I will purchase...as much material as possible to build as many hives as possible!

About the Creator

I have taught in a wide variety of academic and cultural environments, from the New York City Public School System to the Colegio Internacional de San Salvador in El Salvador. Currently, I am teaching Environmental Engineering at Dehesa Charter School in Carlsbad, CA. As a father of three young children I am very concerned about the environmental state of the planet my children will inherit. It is my passion in life to help my students address and solve real world environmental issues. I want to make our school a zero landfill entity. I want to grow, using aquaponic techniques, enough organic , healthy, ultra-local food to feed our students. I want to give my students the scientific background, the engineering tools, and the confidence to become mindful stewards of our planet. We have a lot of work to do!
