The Description

With these funds we can cover expenses including charter busses, hotel accommodations, meals, and activities for the end-of-year college tour.

KIPP Houston High School's mission is to get our students (which are predominantly under-served minorities) to and through college - many of our students will be the first of their families to attend and graduate from college. Only 8% of low-income students in our nation earn a college degree, yet through the work of our students, families, and teachers, KHHS students are graduating at a rate five times the national average and we are committed to ensuring that number keeps growing.

Part of our work in equipping our kids to become college-ready is our 10th grade end-of-year college tour. Last year, our students traveled to Louisiana, Alabama, and Georgia, visiting the University of Georgia, the MLK Museum & Center, the Center for Civil & Human Rights, Spelman College, Morehouse, and Georgia State University. This week-long trip for 80-100 students has a significant impact on them as they head into the final leg of their high school career.

While the college tour is vital to the journey of our students, we can't do this alone - please consider investing as a financial sponsor! Our students are working hard to fundraise a portion of their individual trips, and every $500 contributed towards our PledgeCents goal helps another student become fully funded.

Completed cause

December 7, 2015

Thank you to everyone to supported this cause. Every dollar brings our students one step closer to our End Of Year College Tour!

To keep you posted:

1) This week, sophomore students are completing their candy fundraiser to fulfill their own individual fundraiser requirements

2) We have finalized campus tours with Washington University, St. Louis University, Lindenwood University, and Webster University.

3) We found a great deal with an Embassy Suites that is 10-25 minutes away from each of these universities.

4) We reserved 2 large charter buses to house our 80 students.

5) We have a huge surprise for our students - one of our days will be spent at Six Flags in St. Louis. Six Flags will not be open to the general public today so it'll be a huge treat.

Last day for the match opportuntiy!

November 6, 2015

Thank you so much for your investment. Today is the last day for a match opportunity for up to $1500! Please spread the word to your friends who you know are interested in supporting education equity causes :)

Note: We've altered the goal from $50,000 to $10,000. Hopefully the final task doesn't seem so daunting and it'll encourage people to see that every little bit they support counts.

Adding in some pictures from previous trip :)

2-week push!

October 26, 2015

Thank you again, investors, for financially supporting our sophomores' end-of-year trip!

Updates:

1) From PledgeCents and other fundraisers, we've raised about $3,000 so far. We still have a ways to go but we also recently launched our student candy fundraising, so our students are working hard to raise money alongside us.

2) We've planned an exciting itinerary to St. Louis! The college visits will include Washington University, St. Louis University, Lindenwood University, and Webster University. In addition, we'll also get to spend some time at Six Flags, St. Louis and Mark Twain National Forest.

3) From now until November 6, we have a generous donor matching the next $1500 of donations! Please help spread the word so we can maximize our fundraising efforts.

thank you thank you,

from all 171 sophomore students and 12 sophomore teachers

About the Creator

Terry holds a business degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a master’s in Administration and Supervision from the University of Houston. He has taught high school math for six years (two in Round Rock ISD and four at KIPP Houston High School). In his last three years as a classroom teacher, 98% of his freshmen students passed the Algebra I End-of-Course state exam. He also served as the regional teacher lead for Algebra I during those three years. His passion lies not in math though, but in students and has felt very privileged to be on the front lines of transitioning students into high school and to and through college. The most important objective of his course has always been that with a growth mindset, they achieve much more than they ever thought possible. In the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year, he will be continuing his work as an instructional coach at KIPP Houston High School. In his second year of administration, Terry works with teachers of all subjects and seeks to instill that same growth-mindset belief with the teachers he coaches. In addition to his work with teachers, he will also be a grade-level chair for the sophomore class. Outside of work, he enjoys reading, playing volleyball and basketball, and spending time with his wife and two young boys.
