The Description

With these funds I will...

Directly impact young children's lives by purchasing the necessary tools and supplies to create successful gardens and culinary programs at our two Alexander's Academy locations through our partnership with Recipe for Success Foundation, a non-profit aiming to fight childhood obesity. Our centers are open each day from 6:00 am- 6:30 pm giving us the opportunity to care for children for the majority of the day. We do not take this responsibility lightly and are going to do everything in our power to fight the health and obesity epidemic that has taken over the United States and specifically the Houston, Texas area. Our ultimate goal is to educate children and their families through Recipe for Success' Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education Program about the lifelong benefits that eating fresh, healthy foods can provide. We believe that health education should start at a young age to encourage healthy habits throughout a child's lifespan. We will be giving children the unique opportunity of impacting the eating habits and food culture of previous and future generations through the seed-to-plate concept. This money will help our centers educate hundreds of children and families about the importance of fresh foods, where those foods come from, how to not only follow but to create delicious recipes, and the opportunity to try many new fresh foods that they have never or may never get to try outside of our centers.

Below is a list of materials that Recipe For Success recommends that we purchase to have a successful program. We will be having a garden and culinary program at each of our centers, therefore we need double the amount of materials listed.

Back Up Plan

If I do not meet my goal I hope to purchase...1/3 of the supplies recommended from Recipe for Success. The children will have to share and take short turns with each of the supplies so that everyone gets an equal opportunity to partake in the designated lesson.

About the Creator

I recently graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies and have had children's nutrition education on my heart since taking my first health course. I am employed at Alexander's Academy Childcare, where I am the Health and Nutrition Specialist as well as a Seed-to-Plate Nutrition Education certified instructor. I will be changing the menu at both centers on top of implementing Recipe for Success's curriculum to provide our large amount of children with health education and fresh, nutritious meals.
