A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

The Description

The Advanced Technology class at Harry Stone Montessori Academy have discovered the power of digital photography. To them, a picture is worth a thousand words, because each student has found their voice through the images taken by each student. As and advanced class, students have discovered a natural talent to see the world through a different lens, thus gaining a brand new perspective of the world around them. Currently, 18 students are using 1 camera that actually belongs to the teacher. They are using the cameras to capture IB Learner Profile examples throughout both campuses and exposing the community to the uniqueness of our school. As students become more skilled in using a dslr camera and more keen at editing their images, the demand for the camera has grown exponentially as students begin to design projects that demonstrate the IB learner profiles. The Advanced student photographs have also gained the respect and envy of their peers. Two things have come from this, parents and students have asked for an after-school photography club and the students want to start an IB design project that tells the story of their community through pictures. What we need however are more cameras. Harry Stone is looking to purchase 3 DSLRs (Cannon EOS Rebel T3i 18-55mm IS II Lens Kit) for the classroom and potentially for a photography club. This purchase will allow for greater access and opportunity for the students to continue to deepen their perspective of life through the camera lens. Students will also have the opportunity to enter various photo competitions that occur throughout the district and city. Most importantly, these particular students will be able to develop strong portfolios for the High School digital arts programs at the various schools that each students desires to attend. This is an avenue that past students at Harry Stone have never pursued with because of lack of exposure or access to real-life equipment to express themselves appropriately through pictures. The obvious passion is there, the skills are developing and we want to take advantage of every chance we have to help our students "picture" themselves making an impact on the global society.

Back Up Plan

If our goal is not reached, the money earned will go toward the purchase of as many camera kits as possible along with accessories such as SD cards, tripods and cases.

The 'Santa Hats and Texans Jerseys' event was wonderful. I am very grateful to all those who came out and invested in our cause. It was a pleasure meeting our investors in person, which deepened my gratitude toward what PledgeCents is doing for public education. Each and every cent will be used to inspire students to see their academic possibilities extend far beyond the classroom. We are almost to our goal.

About the Creator

My educational passion is to get Harry Stone thinking about the digital age and how our students can use technology to make an immediate global impact. I have been in this current position for 1 year and our community has embraced the need to step into the 21st Century and face the financial challenge that it brings. My continued goal is to introduce our students, staff and community to new technologies, expose them to the power of technology in the classroom and most importantly, create an environment that meets our students where they are. We call this StoneAgeThinking!
