The Description
Two devastating Natural Disasters, Hurricanes Irma and Maria, destroyed Puerto Rico in 2017. People were displaced by the loss of their homes, electricity was not restored for months, and many schools on the island were demolished, leaving the community in despair. To this day, there are still many areas of the country working hard to rebuild and return to normal.
Central Charter School is a non-profit, 501(c)(3), K-8th grade school located in Broward County School District. We were one of the first charter schools to open in Broward County, Florida in 1997, and have been open for over 20 years. As the Assistant Principal, for middle school, my students approached me with the idea to support them on an educational mission trip to Puerto Rico to give back to the country in light of the devastation experienced from Irma and Maria.
We have connected with a school in Las Piedras, Puerto Rico that is in dire need of support. Academia Cristiana Cohelet is a PK - 12th grade school, with approximately 350 students, that was severely impacted. They went without power for 6 months after the devastating hurricanes and lost many supplies and resources necessary for success in educating their students. We are dedicated to helping this school rebuild and get back to how their system of educating students was prior to the two hurricanes.
Currently, we are having supply drives in the community in an effort to raise supplies to bring to the school and students. Additionally, we have contacted several community sponsors to help provide supplies and resources for the school. The funds we raise will all go towards our mission trip to Puerto Rico. Our fundraising efforts will allow us to take 40 students and 10 teachers to Las Piedras, Puerto Rico to deliver supplies, help Academia Cristiana Cohelet clean and paint various classrooms on their campus and rebuild the computer lab that was completely destroyed. The funds raised will allow us to obtain flights and accommodations for the students and teachers going on this educational mission trip.
Our mission trip will take place from March 25 - March 29, 2019. We will visit Academia Cristiana Cohelet and immediately get to work. Our plans are to deliver the supplies raised, rebuild the computer lab and mentor students at the school. With your help, we can make this plan a reality. My students came up with the idea to become humanitarians and give back to the world. If they are willing to act in a selfless manner, we all can afford to donate to their cause. Join our team and help us give back to Puerto Rico!
Back Up Plan
In addition to this platform, we are seeking the help from our community in order to make this a reality. We are having multiple fundraisers at the school and in the community.
