The Description

KIPP Houston High School currently works with a 99% underserved minority population on the west side of Houston. This year our staff will create the first Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) to support our community of LGBT students! In addition, a network of "safe spaces" will be implemented across the school with the help of dedicated staff who will commit to being trained in support LGBT students of color in 9-12 grade. In order to do so, we will need help with funding training and implementing a system of student ambassadors who will notify students they can be approached regarding the GSA.

Funds collected will be used as a source for bringing educators from LGBT organizations to our campus to educate our student body on social justice issues and the LGBT community. It will also serve as funding for future student trips to college campuses where students will visit LGBT Centers. Additionally, it will cover teacher training materials, safe space stickers, and student ambassador wristbands. It will also allow students to have a resource to create an awareness of the LGBT community through creating educational displays that will be visible for students in our school hallways. Finally, it will cover providing resources for students at meetings, as well as motivational rewards.

Your funding will help our staff create a high school atmosphere that will encourage students to be allies that are accepting of individuals regardless of any aspect of their identity. In addition, it will help us to challenge our students to think critically on social justice issues and matters of equity. For any questions, please reach out to Shannen Garza at shannen.garza@kipphouston.org.

Back Up Plan

If our goal is not met, all funds will be used toward assisting in the creation of our school's GSA and safe space support system.
