Movement Wakes up the Mind

The Description

With these funds I will purchase 3 standing desks and 1 stool to accompany the desks. I currently have two standing desks. I rotate my seating arrangement to allow various students an opportunity to use these desks. I have quickly noticed that there are more than two students currently in my class who benefit from a standing desk. One of the standing desks has a metal bar that allows students to rock it back and forth. This allows them to have movement without disrupting their learning or distracting peers around them. The second standing desk does not have this bar. It still allows students the option to stand which is hugely beneficial, however the lack of a bar is a noticeable difference. I would like to purchase 3 more standing desks with a bar, allowing more students in my classroom to have a desk  that is more suited to their needs. Developmentally a first grade student needs lots of movement throughout the day. My schedule allows for variation in our activities such as moving to and from the carpet, working with partners, reading silently on bean bags, and more. However, there are many students who still are in need of more movement during the instructional day. This is where a standing desk is vital and from experience I have witnessed better focus and work production.

Back Up Plan

If we do not reach our goal I will purchase as many desks as I can with the money generously donated. If I do not have enough for 3 standing desks and 1 stool. I will first put the donated money towards the desks. If there is money left, but not equal to the cost of a standing desk or stool I will put it to other flexible seating options such as folding seat spots, ball seats, floor cushions, and foldable floor desks.

About the Creator

I began teaching in 2011 and moved to my current district in 2016. This is the community that I live in and I know these children very well, many are my neighbors. I decided I wanted to teach when I was in elementary school and have focused all my studies on that goal. I began volunteering in elementary classrooms while in high school and I would always TA for teachers as a class period. I taught preschool while going to college and substitute taught while getting my credential. I love working with students of all ages in all areas.
I believe a student’s desire and passion for learning is formed during their first few years of school, so it is very important to capture their love for school early on. The students come to my classroom excited for the day and I work very hard to ensure that this excitement continues throughout each day. The students come from a wide range of home environments, but they all come from families that want the best for their children.
