Columbia High School, the District's flagship learning institution, has along-standing tradition of academic achievement, excellence and pride. Our efforts continue to focus on ensuring that all students are prepared for the 21st century, within our local communities and the larger global society.

A four-year high school with an enrollment of approximately 1950 students, the racially diverse student body had four students named as National Merit Scholar Semifinalists;22 honored as National Merit Commended Scholars; two students acknowledged as National Achievement Scholar Semifinalists; two named as National Achievement Scholarship Program Outstanding Participants; one recognized as National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar; and one designated as a National Hispanic Program Honorable Mention Scholar. More than 90 percent of our students take the SATs. A number of students receive early action and/or decision acceptances to prestigious institutions of higher learning.

Our curriculum meets the varied needs of our student body and the diversity within our school's local communities. In addition to the core curriculum, Columbia offers a wide range of elective courses in areas, such as animation, film making,television production, computer graphics, journalism, drama, sociology,psychology, economics, forensics, biochemistry and computer technology. Advanced mathematics students are challenged by rigorous electives, including Calculus III and Differential Equations.

Our Advanced Placement(AP) program fully prepares our students for higher education and career goals.Columbia High School offers a full complement of 21 AP courses, which allow students to enter most colleges and universities with advanced standing. The AP Scholar Awards Program recognized 120 students for their exceptional achievement on the AP examinations. Six of those students were named as National AP Scholars; 34 were named as Advanced Placement Scholars with Distinction; and 21 were recognized as AP Scholars with Honors.

There are 50 extracurricular activities that include a cadre of options related to our academic and athletic offerings. Our Key Club, Future Business Leaders of America, Student Government, Junior States, Mock Trial and Amnesty International have direct links to the curriculum and our communities. Our award-winning student broadcasting television station provides curricular support to the morning announcements, as well as daily programming to our communities. In 2012, the student newspaper, The Columbian,was one of only thirteen high school newspapers in the nation to be awarded, \\"Most Outstanding High School Newspaper" by the American Scholastic Press Association. Guildscript, the school's art and literary magazine received two national recognitions.

I've been a school librarian for nearly 20 years. After spending 17 years in a K-5 environment, I moved to the HS level. I enjoy helping the HS students with research and technology, and teaching them the skills they need to be successful in HS and college.
