This past year working in a Philadelphia school was the most challenging of my life; with limited resources and a very small school library, my students lacked basic supplies to come to class. To support my students, much of their supplies came from trips to the dollar store where I spent my own money. The students at my school deserve the absolute best and I am very lucky to serve them. Any amount is helpful as I prepare for my second year teaching at Simon Gratz High School!

Knowing I needed to get more directly involved, I joined Teach For America. This fall, I will be teaching 6th grade social studies and English at Franklin Square Elementary/Middle School. I decided to join TFA and become a teacher because I have saw and experienced, first-hand, the inequities Black children face in public education. Black children are not assured safety in every aspect of life, and behind school walls they are disproportionately suspended, disciplined, given up on, diagnosed with behavioral/learning disabilities and failed. I believe Black children should not have to be "lucky" to have good teachers and a good educational experience. Black students matter.
