About

"Veritas Preparatory Charter School is founded on the belief that all students — regardless of race, class, or socioeconomic circumstance — are entitled to a high-quality education defined by high expectations. Veritas Prep is designed with a “no excuses” approach based on an intensive study of the highest performing urban schools. Veritas Prep provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and character education within a structured learning environment. We utilize an extended school day and year and data-driven instruction to drive dramatic gains in student achievement. The school opened in August 2012 with Grade 5 and will grow one grade per year to eventually serve students in Grades 5-8. Many of our scholars live in neighborhoods where educational opportunities are limited and expectations for academic achievement are low. Less than 32% of Springfield residents have graduated with a four-year college degree. Almost half of the students who start as kindergartners in Springfield city schools do not graduate from high school."

Teacher

I am a third generation educator currently teaching math and science to 24 innovative, compassionate, and curious 7th graders in Springfield, MA. I am passionate about incorporating the newest education technologies in meaningful and responsible ways to my classrooms, particularly for my students who have lacked access to these resources. S.T.E.A.M. incorporation in my classroom is pivotal. I have been given a unique opportunity to reflect constantly on these connections and integrate cross-curricular lessons with my current teaching schedule of math and science. For the last four years I worked in Miami-Dade County Public Schools serving first as a tutor and mentor with the AmeriCorps program City Year, and then as a co-teacher in a blended technology classroom. My previous classroom gave daily laptop access to 220 students, an average of 50 students per class. Students progressed through virtual interactive curriculum to reinforce their small group classroom demonstrations, activities, and lessons. It focused on 21st century skills, including collaboration and presentation, emphases I have continued in my current class. Please support our efforts to bring the latest and most effective resources to our engaged and inquisitive classroom!
