6-8 Humanities
If to educate is to lead out the gifts already present in each and every one of us, then my goal is to bring out the best in the emerging adolescents I serve everyday. This is no easy task as a middle school humanities educator in the rapidly changing Woodlawn neighborhood of NE Portland, Oregon. First and foremost, I believe that these young people need to see their own ability to act on the world to make it a better place. I believe that in that process--of thinking, acting, reflecting and repeating--students will begin to recognize and accept their power for good, becoming leaders who seek new opportunities to learn and do. This, of course, is the ultimate achievement in the world of teaching and learning: to generate a cadre of lifelong learners and lifelong doers, ready for anything.
