About
CHAPTER HISTORY:
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded at Howard University in 1913. By 1943, their ranks had reached Western New York with the establishment of the Gamma Kappa Chapter, comprised of college students and college graduates who pledged to better their community through Sisterhood, Scholarship and Service. By 1979, the national organization had grown so large that it created separate chapters for college graduates and formed the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter, adding a second chapter to the Buffalo/Niagara Falls metro area. For Gamma Kappa, there were 18 Presidents of the “mixed chapter,” who served with distinction including current chapter members Rowena Adams Jones, Ophelia Nicholas and the recently deceased Delta icon B. Gwendolyn Greene.
Beginning in 1982, the following Presidents were elected to lead the Buffalo Alumnae Chapter, including Yvonne Hargrave, Carolyn Holder, Joyce Green, Gertrude Burke, Mattie Rhodes, Joyce Harrington, Jacqueline Massey, Wygenia Miles, Bonita Durand, Willie McCullough, Beverly David-Lewis, Robyn Tate, Karen Stanley Fleming, and Mattie Rhodes.
Buffalo Alumnae Chapter has a tradition of being "small but mighty." Having grown to its current membership of over 100 college-educated professional women, it has long been active on the regional and national scene. In 1970, under the leadership of Chapter President Ophelia Nicholas, the chapter hosted the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Eastern Regional Conference, and in 1995, under the leadership of Chapter President Mattie L. Rhodes, Ph.D., the chapter again hosted the Eastern Regional Conference, co-chaired by Past Chapter President Gertrude Burke. In 1995-1998 the chapter developed a Delta Sigma Theta Historical Fashion Show, chaired by Chapter Past President Rowena Adams-Jones. They put the show on the road, building it from a local presentation, to an event at the Regional Conference in Philadelphia to the Diamond Jubilee National Convention in San Francisco in 1988.
Some of the most outstanding chapter projects have included “Jabberwock”, which debuted in the 1960’s and offers leadership development and life skills training for girls, culminating in a pageant with scholarships and prizes. Delta also operates the Black College Tour college preparatory program, which celebrated its 20th year of operation in 2011, the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy for elementary and middle school girls and the Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS (Growing and Empowering Myself Successfully) program for high school girls. To address the challenges faced by young Black males, Delta operates the EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence.)
