About

The Detroit Achievement Academy is a free public charter school in Detroit, Michigan. We at Detroit Achievement Academy want to shake things up a bit. We have a grand vision for what education can look like and are excited to be creating it in the great city of Detroit. We are using the best educational model in the country, Expeditionary Learning, and are committed to our students, their families, and to our neighborhood. We believe that all students can achieve at high levels and that it is our responsibility to support them in an intense and holistic way. We are thrilled to be able to provide a world-class education in a world-class city.

Detroit Achievement Academy is proudly located in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood in Detroit. We have 65 students and will add one grade level each year. Detroit Achievement Academy exists to holistically support the education and development of students who have the determination, drive, and skills to shape their own path of high achievement with the ultimate goal of creating civically engaged, joyful citizens who are ready to change the world.

Jen McMillan

Founding Teacher

Jen McMillan is overjoyed to be a second grade teacher at Detroit Achievement Academy, and is leading our crew of "big kids" to make big gains! Last year, Jen and Kimberly's first grade students averaged over 1.5 years of growth in reading and were in the 95th percentile for growth in math nationwide. Born and raised in metro-Detroit, Jen spent seven years in the San Francisco Bay Area teaching high school and middle school, and working in teacher support and development with Teach For America. She earned her BA in Psychology from Harvard University in Massachusetts and her Masters in Education from Alliant International University. She is an Teacher Ambassador for Jossey-Bass Education as a way to continue her ongoing professional development (beyond the phenomenal training she receives through DAA and Expeditionary Learning). In her free time, Jen is an avid runner, reader, certified yoga instructor, and dog lover.

Anne Brophy

Kindergarten Teacher

I've been teaching in Detroit for 15 years. I am a founding kindergarten teacher at Detroit Achievement Academy, the BEST charter school with the HIGHEST results in Detroit. I have a bachelors degree from Oakland University and a masters degree from Madonna University. I love teaching in an urban environment where students learn to believe in themselves and what they can offer the world.
