About
These statistics are not a reflection of our children’s potential. Kids growing up in poverty can and do achieve at the highest levels. Instead, these statistics reflect the systemic lack of equity for kids in low-income communities.
There are numerous forces behind this injustice—racism, outdated policies, lack of resources, and much more—so there isn’t just one simple fix. To make things right we must come together as students, teachers, principals, activists, social entrepreneurs, politicians, and all others to disrupt the causes of injustice and create solutions. It’s not just the lives of individual children at stake—this affects all of us. And it’s the responsibility of all of us to change things. Our mission is to enlist, develop, and mobilize as many as possible of our nation's most promising future leaders to grow and strengthen the movement for educational equity and excellence.
We recruit remarkable and diverse individuals to become teachers in low-income communities. They commit to teach for two years and are hired by our partner public schools across the country. During these two years they are called corps members. We train and support corps members in the practices of great teachers and leaders. With hard work, perseverance, and strong partnerships with their students, students’ families, and communities, corps members can dramatically increase the opportunities available to their students in school and in life. Corps members don’t just teach their students, they learn from them. At the end of two years, they use those lessons to choose their path forward. Many stay in the classroom. Others move into politics, school leadership, nonprofit work, advocacy, and more. All of their paths matter because together they form a network—connecting, expanding, and strengthening the movement to give all kids access to a great education.

My journey towards becoming a teacher began during my junior year in college, when I returned from my study abroad experience in Denmark and began working on local education policy issues at a grassroots campaign firm in Nashville. I quickly became absorbed in learning about the reasons behind the massive achievement disparities present in American public education - particularly visible in Nashville's urban core. This research turned into my senior thesis, and my senior thesis turned into my decision to move to Baltimore and teach World Literature at a public high school in the northeast region of the city. I am so excited to meet my 10th graders in Baltimore, to work alongside other activists in education inequity, and to pour out my heart for the deserving souls and minds of my students.

After completing Teach for America - 2016 Philadelphia Institute I will be responsible for my very own classroom! I can't wait to decorate and meet my students and their families. One of the biggest hurdles that students in high need schools face is a lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies. To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full with materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have them. I will also purchase copy paper to ensure that I can provide my students with high quality learning materials, whether that is exit tickets, independent activities, or homework. As some of you may know, I am starting my first year of teaching with Teach For America this September in Buffalo, NY where I will have my own classroom! I am so excited to meet my students, their families and the community! One of the biggest struggles when working with students in high needs schools is the lack of the necessary materials that are needed daily. It makes it infinitely more difficult for students to take part in activities and classwork when they do not have basic supplies. To get the year started off right, I will use the funds that I raise to purchase the startup supplies needed to welcome my students to a classroom that is clean and stocked full of materials. This will allow me to provide the required supplies to students that otherwise would not have the,.
